Space Technology Projects
Beyond the fundamental research and the space exploration, space activities have several practical uses: the prevention of natural disasters, and the implementation of new services for everyday life (navigation, telecoms, etc.), among the others.
The Swiss Space Implementation (SSI) plan 2014-2023, recently updated, promotes the innovative and competitive Swiss space sector to launch high rewards venture on the national focal areas of technology, science & exploration, space transportation and application.
In the area of technology, Switzerland has established five technological priorities:
- High-precision mechanisms and structures
- Atomic clocks
- Electro-optical data transmission
- Technologies for scientific instruments
- Technologies for user-funded applications
In this challenging context, STeP is the HES-SO response compliant with the double mission of the school, i.e., the development of the applied research and the cooperation between academia and industry.
STeP provides a coordinated support to our groups in facing new challenges within the ESA and NCA programmes.
Each space mission demands the development of customized and reliable technology systems able to work long-time in a coarse environment without immediate human control. We have defined the key areas of applied research:
